Dorsal IV—I, 8; Anal III, 9, begins before soft dorsal; caudal emarginate; pectoral without axillary scale, long as head without snout. Uniform. Length 279 mm.

Canton, Ningpo, Shanghai, Chefoo, Pekin, Newchwang, Liao Ho (Japan). Günther remarks of Basilewsky's Mugil so-iuy "He mentions the eyes as 'nictitantes'; but this seems to refer merely to the circular eyelid, which covers only the margin of the orbit, as also shown in the figure."

Depth 44 to 5; head 44 to 54. Snout shorter than eye in young, longer with age; eye 4 to 5 in head, 2 in interorbital, without adipose lids; maxillary end exposed; lips thin, smooth. Scales 26 to 28, transversely 9 or 10, predorsal 15 or 16. Dorsal and anal scaly. Dorsal IV-I, 7 or 8; Anal III, 8; caudal nearly trucate; pectoral much shorter than head, without axillary scale; ventral half of pectoral. Back dark olive, below paler to whitish. About 6 dark longitudinal bands. Edges of fins dusky. Pectoral blackish, entirely so in young. Reaches 400 mm.
